Hispanic Theatre Project
In Partnership with the Latin Ballet of Virginia
Barksdale Theatre, in cooperation with the Latin Ballet of Virginia, has initiated the three-year Hispanic Theatre Project, which will begin in September, 2009. The primary objectives of this project are to:
- Expand among the general population an appreciation for the magnificent contributions that world-class Spanish and Hispanic playwrights, composers and philosophers have made to Western culture
- Enable Greater Richmond’s growing Hispanic population to feel better included in and connected to the cultural life of our community-at-large;
- Provide a showcase for professional artists of Spanish and/or Hispanic ancestry, both local and national
- Create an entertaining and engaging forum for the examination and discussion of issues relevant to Hispanic culture
The first production of the three-year Project took place in September 2009 with Boleros for the Disenchanted, the first production in Barksdale's 2009 - 2010 Signature Season.
Took place September 18 – October 25, 2009
At Willow Lawn
By José Rivera
Produced in association with the Latin Ballet of Virginia

Playwright José Rivera, the Academy Award nominated screenwriter of The Motorcycle Diaries, revisits his native Puerto Rico in an exploration of love and marriage that reverberates with the passion of Latin love songs. Romance and humor collide when young Flora discovers her fiancé has been cheating on her. Ignoring both her mother's advice that a spell could make him faithful and her father's proposal to have him killed, she changes course and falls for another man - handsome and respectable Eusebio. The couple moves across the world to Alabama and begins a 38 year journey of adventure, disillusion and sacrifice that will forge the deeper love which grows long after the rush of romance has gone. "Magical! An enchanting production that sizzles with passion. José Rivera has penned a heartfelt ode to true love." — Metro (Boston)
