POETRY OUT LOUD (POL) STATE
COMPETITION INFORMATION
Three Regional Champions from each of the seven (7) Virginia Commission for the Arts Regions will compete in Richmond for the title of Virginia State Poetry Out Loud Champion.
* There is no dress code. Dress in what makes you feel comfortable.
* Do not wear costumes or use props.
* You will use a microphone to recite.

POEM RULES:
* All poems must be selected from the official Poetry Out Loud (POL) print or online anthologies.
* Maximum recitation time per poem: About 3 - 4 Minutes
* Three poems will be recited at the State Competition.
*One poem must be 25 lines or shorter, and one must be pre-20th century. The same poem may be used to meet both criteria.
* Recitation order is up to the student but once submitted cannot be changed.
TITLE AND ORDER SUBMISSION
* Titles and order of poems must be submitted in advance on the Regional Winner Report Form by the school contest coordinator . <LINK>
* All Regional Winner Report forms must be typed and submitted by email to the state coordinator within one week of the regional contest date.
* Selections or order may not be changed once submitted.
INTRODUCING THE POEM
* Contestant will identify the poem by title and author and recite from memory.
* Recitation should include epigraphs if included in the POL anthology.
* Student should not make editorial comments before or after the poem.
All Contestants MUST submit a Regional Winner Report Form to the State Coordinator by 5:00 pm on these dates:
Region 1: 2/19/10
Region 2: 2/19/10
Region 3: 3/1/10
Region4a: 2/26/10
Region 4b: 3/1/10
Region 5: 2/26/10
Region 6: 3/4/10
All regional winners and chaperones will be responsible for their own transportation, food and lodging costs to the state competition. Travel in excess of 25 miles from Richmond will be reimbursed at the nonprofit rate of 14 cents per mile for one car per school.
