August - September 2010
Information on Poetry Out Loud made available to high school English, language arts and theater arts teachers throughout Virginia.
Monday, August 23 – Friday, October 29, 2010
Teacher registration. All participating teachers must register by 5 p.m. Friday, October 29, in order to be included in the Poetry Out Loud Competition.
Poetry Out Loud materials sent to participating teachers as registration occurs.
September–November 2010
Classroom preparations and competitions.
School Coordinators make arrangements for school-level competition.
All first-place classroom-level winner information sheets due to school coordinator by date set by School Coordinator.
December 2010
School-wide contests held to determine School Champion and 1st Runner-up.
December 20, 2010 by 5:00 pm
School Champion and 1st Runner-up information sheets emailed to State Coordinator.
School Participation report form emailed to State Coordinator.
January 2011
Preparation and rehearsal of School Champion for Regional Contest.
School Champion begins preparation of third poem.
February 2011
Regional Contests held.
Regional Champions finalize preparation of third poem for State Final.
Regional Winners’ reports emailed by School Coordinators to State Coordinator

State Poetry Out Loud Semi-finals and finals held in Richmond at the
Empire Theatre, 114 W. Broad Street, Richmond with registration starting at 12:00 p. m.; Program from 1:00 – 5:00 p. m.

National Poetry Out Loud finals held in Washington, D.C.
The Virginia Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest is a partnership of the National Endowment of the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and Theatre IV and Barksdale Theatre.
