Update - April 5, 2008:
Here is the press release from Bruce Miller, our Artistic Director.
After lengthy deliberation, here’s what we’ve decided. During the summer of 2008, we will welcome high school volunteers to assist as ushers and crew members for our professional production of Guys and Dolls, directed and choreographed in the Empire Theatre by Patti D’Beck, veteran of 18 Broadway productions. If you are interested in working on Guys and Dolls, please .
We will not be producing a high school musical at Steward School in 2008; we will not be producing a cabaret with high school performers on the Guys and Dolls set; we will not be producing a non-musical featuring high school actors at Barksdale Willow Lawn.
The reasons for all the NOTs are many.
1. The Steward School is not available to us this summer.
2. Our production crew is tied up relocating all of our shop facilities and set, prop and costume storage due to an unexpected need to change buildings.
3. Chase Kniffen has moved on to an exciting new opportunity, and will not beo working for Barksdale.
4. The Virginia Legislature, dealing with their own financial crisis, has decided to withhold all funding to nonprofit arts organizations during the coming fiscal year.
Bottom line, this was the only responsible decision we could make.
Now here’s the good news.
During the summer of 2009, we will co-produce All Shook Up with The Steward School and at The Steward School. We will welcome seniors who graduate in 2008 to audition and perform for All Shook Up, since we will not be producing in your senior year. As always, there will be no tuition fee to participate in All Shook Up.
For the remainder of the 2007-08 Season, and all of the 2008-09 Season, we will continue to offer TenSpot tickets to all Barksdale and Theatre IV shows, enabling all high school students who sign up for the BTW (Barksdale Theatre Workshop) to purchase tickets for only $10 to our professional productions.
Beginning in the fall of 2009, our professional theatre artists will begin offering master classes in all areas of theatre. All classes will be presented as single-day classes, not as a series. They will complement—not take the place of—classes at Christian Youth Theatre, HATTheatre and SPARC. All two-hour classes will be $10 a pop.
We will continue to promote your high school productions, and will promote the productions at Christian Youth Theatre, HATTheatre and SPARC, and other opportunities for teen theatre enthusiasts on our FaceBook page and here on our website.
Thanks for your understanding. We hope you’ll join us for The Little Dog Laughed, Greater Tuna, Peter Pan, and Guys and Dolls.
